Born of World War II aircraft fighters, there is something definitely odd about Bristol Cars, Ltd. The whole package is just strange. The minute British "luxury car" manufacturer has produced odd ball, ad-hoc automobiles in Albion since 1946. And from what one can tell, it's only a select few Britons who pony-up the $263,000 needed to purchase a new Blenheim 3 (Bristol's annual production figure is around 100 cars). Their financial advisers have to be Bristol owners themselves to sit idly by while their clients burn their sterling in so reckless a fashion.

But this awkward outfit has made a 525 horsepowered, V-10 charge into the 21st Century with their latest Bristol Fighter SCR. If the Blenheim 3 was the ugly offspring of a Bentley Continental R mating with an 80s Chevy Camarro, the more up-to-date Fighter is more the kin of the Bentley Continental GT mating with the latest Corvette. Less ugly and more contemporary.

Bristol's Costly Fighting Chance

Bristol claims that the Fighter is good for better than 200 mph. The question, of course, is who but the certifiably suicidal would take their lives and run in a glorified kit-car at a speed that the owners of the technologically reliable and safely engineered Mercedes-Benz SLR are themselves afraid to travel?

And the price? $481,000 after VAT. At more than $100,000 costlier than the vastly more appealing Rolls-Royce Phantom, there is monetary justification to Bristol's ludicrous claim of being "Britain's Most Exclusive Luxury Car."

For what is essentially a mom and pop operation, there is some merit to be given the longevity of a company that would not last a year Stateside. Bristol finds a way to fill a need. And the need, surprisingly enough exists in what must be the most bizarre car collectors on earth.
